The seven piece Tangram is basically a dissection puzzle. It is made from a square that is cut into seven pieces. The pieces are then used to reform other shapes. In some cases all of the pieces are used, while in others a few pieces are used. While reforming the pieces, students will be exposed to various geometric ideas. Many of these skills and concepts will occur subconsciously as the students put together, flip, slide and turn the various pieces to solve visual/spatial puzzles.

This book is designed to help teachers gain the most from Tangrams as a teaching tool. If the spatial concepts behind the Tangram pieces and the solving of the puzzles are made explicit, then students' geometric reasoning will improve. To assist teachers in making these geometric ideas explicit, each activity or series of activities includes a clear purpose, and in some cases teacher tips designed to help students understand these ideas.
