Some children need more help learning to read and write than others, even with the best teaching methods at school.  DSF offers a series of small group sessions throughout the school year for students needing extra assistance to develop reading, spelling and writing skills.

Currently, DSF offers three small group literacy programs designed to support all school aged children to develop stronger literacy skills.  These group programs are run through our literacy clinics and at our main office in South Perth.  At times, DSF also runs these programs in the school holidays in an intensive mode format. Information about our group programs can be found below:

Sounds~Write is an evidence based phonics program utilising an exciting and highly successful approach to the teaching of reading, spelling and writing. The program is developmentally appropriate for beginning readers and also offers fast and highly effective intervention for children at all levels who have fallen behind in their reading and spelling.

Talk for Writing

Many students find the writing process extremely challenging. These students may have wonderful ideas, but struggle to get their thoughts onto the page. Even those who read reasonably well can experience difficulty with written expression.  Talk for Writing is a unique process that uses spoken activities to develop writing skills. Quality writing is created by first expanding and developing students’ oral language skills and then teaching the necessary steps for exceptional sentence, paragraph and text construction.
Talk for Writing has the potential to dramatically improve students’ writing. The approach also offers students with learning and language difficulties an opportunity to develop stronger writing skills. Feedback from students indicates that they find Talk For Writing ‘fun, engaging and motivating.’

Becoming a word detective and writing wizard

Reading and writing is a juggling act – to perform well, students need strong vocabulary knowledge, good spelling skills, firm understanding of grammar and the ability to organise their ideas logically. As a result, some students struggle to become successful readers and writers – even when they have wonderful ideas! This program is designed specifically to improve a number of skills that are crucial for reading and writing; namely, knowledge of vocabulary, grammar, and reading comprehension strategies. These eight sessions are based on high quality instructional approaches, including Word Aware, Talk for Writing and Sounds~Write. This course is designed for students who are looking to continue developing their vocabulary, grammar and reading comprehension.
