Transforming Learning Across the Primary Curriculum – with Pie Corbett and Julia Strong (Online)

Wednesday 10 February 2021 4:00PM - Wednesday 3 March 2021 5:15PM

Sessions will take place from 4.00 - 5.15 pm (AWST) on 10th, 17th, 24th February and 3rd March 2021.

This ground-breaking online training will take you on an exciting journey demonstrating the power of Talk for Writing across the whole curriculum. It will be particularly useful for teachers who already have some understanding of the Talk for Writing process for English.

Pie-and-Julia.pngPie and Julia will demonstrate how you can help all children internalise the key language features of any type of text. We’ll start off with entertaining, language games and model text focusing on fantasy non-fiction, to develop the tune of the text before moving on to real non-fiction.

Drawing on the practice of highly successful primary schools in challenging areas, we will then show how to build on these patterns so that the children can apply them to any subject in the curriculum, as well as showing how the process can be used to build the language patterns that are specific to particular subjects including practical subjects.

  • Session 1. How ‘faction’ & non-fiction units in English underpin the process
  • Session 2: How the imitation-innovation-independent application process underpins all learning and supports all subjects
  • Session 3: How each subject also has its own tune (vocabulary, subject-specific generic phrasing) which needs to be taught within the context of each subject
  • Session 4: How TfW strategies support understanding, recalling and thinking about the content of any subject

Help your class to talk and write like a historian, a geographer, a scientist, a mathematician; and they will be able to transfer learning from subject to subject too!

For primary head-teachers and members of primary management teams plus all primary teachers from Y1 – 6 and secondary teachers responsible for primary - secondary transfer.

DSF Literacy Services has a ‘no refund’ policy. The exception would be when a Professional Learning Course had to be cancelled by the Foundation. All other requests for cancellation will be invited to re-register for another session. Late cancellation (less than 48 business hrs) will necessitate the Foundation deducting an administration fee of $25.00 and transferring the balance to another Professional Learning Course.
