Sounds-Write is an evidence-based phonics program utilising an exciting and highly successful approach to the teaching of reading, spelling and writing. This four day intensive course offers an instructional method that is structured, cumulative, sequential and explicit; all of which are strongly recommended for teaching children to read and spell. It places emphasis on providing practice that is grounded in physical, concrete experience of the skills and conceptual understanding that students need to assimilate. Sounds-Write is developmentally appropriate for beginning readers in foundation, Year 1 and Year 2, and also offers fast and highly effective intervention for children at all year levels who have fallen behind in their reading and spelling from Year 3 onwards.

Presenter: Margie Backhouse
Margie is both a primary teacher with 26 years’ experience and a fully registered Sounds~Write trainer. She has specialised in learning difficulties and literacy and held a number of senior positions in this area. Margie has worked at DSF for four years and since 2013 has been running Sounds~Write training both on-site at DSF and off-site at schools. She has taught Sounds~Write in a whole class teaching situation, in small groups and to individual students, including via an online classroom. Margie’s view is that Sounds~Write results in better teaching.
DSF Literacy Services has a ‘no refund’ policy. The exception would be when a Professional Learning Course had to be cancelled by the Foundation. All other requests for cancellation will be invited to re-register for another session. Late cancellation (less than 48 business hrs) will necessitate the Foundation deducting an administration fee of $25.00 and transferring the balance to another Professional Learning Course.
