Spelling is just one component of literacy but the implications of struggling to spell are significant. For many students the acquisition of spelling is far more challenging than learning to read.
In this practical full-day workshop participants will explore why this occurs and will review the layers of spelling. In addition, the five key principles underpinning both the teaching of spelling and the remediation of spelling difficulties will be examined. Particular attention will be paid to:
– phonological awareness and phonics;
– reading and spelling as reversible processes;
– morphology; etymology; and,
– the role of metacognition.
Strategies and related classroom activities designed to significantly improve poor spelling will be provided during the session.
Presenter: Kim Bloor, BA (Hons), MPsych (Ed. & Dev.), Dip. Ed, (Spec. Ed.). Kim is a Psychologist at DSF Literacy and Clinical Services where she assesses children, teenagers, and adults with learning difficulties and disabilities. She also consults with parents on appropriate evidence-based classroom and individual strategies to improve literacy.
