Talk for Writing: Short burst writing and grammar 119P

The Imitation phase of a Talk for Writing unit is the phase in which the foundations for strong writing skills are laid down. However, it can be hard to know how to select and plan writing activities that will ensure the development of students’ written grammar, as well as their ability to write with a particular style or focus. In this half-day workshop, Dean will address how grammar teaching can be embedded into short-burst writing activities, in a way that leads to effective – and engaging – teaching and learning.  Participants will gain a greater understanding of how to plan Imitation phase writing activities that
will support a successful transition into the longer writing tasks of the Innovate and Independent Application phases, allowing students to become stronger and more confident writers.

Prior attendance at a two-day Talk for Writing workshop is a pre-requisite for this workshop.

Presenter: Dean Thompson, TfW Trainer and Literacy Consultant
Dean is currently working closely with Pie Corbett on the ‘Primary Writing Project’, working with clusters of schools over a two year period in order to transform their reading and writing results through Talk for Writing. In addition, Dean and Pie have recently begun to develop the ‘Primary Reading Project’, specifically designed to improve reading outcomes in schools. He was a deputy of a 600+ student school in a very challenging area and has managed the successful implementation of TfW there transforming the school and improving student outcomes.
