Good writing is dependent on reading and access to knowledge of language: as Pie Corbett puts it, ‘You can’t write it if you can’t say it, and you can’t say it unless you’ve heard it, a lot!’
This one-day workshop will focus on the teaching of reading comprehension. Participants will be guided through the selection of texts; how to develop and activate the prior knowledge and vocabulary students need for comprehension to be successful; how to ensure all students are able to access the text being studied; and, how to conduct effective whole-class shared-reading lessons.
Participants will benefit from Dean’s wealth of experience gained through the work he has completed alongside Pie Corbett.
Prior attendance at a two day Talk for Writing workshop is a pre-requisite for this workshop.

Dean is currently working closely with Pie Corbett on the ‘Primary Writing Project’, working with clusters of schools over a two year period in order to transform their reading and writing results through Talk for Writing. In addition, Dean and Pie have recently begun to develop the ‘Primary Reading Project’, specifically designed to improve reading outcomes in schools. He was a deputy of a 600+ student school in a very challenging area and has managed the successful implementation of TfW there transforming the school and improving student outcomes.
