Talk for Reading
The Talk for Reading day will explore how to raise standards in reading by providing some practical comprehension strategies and whole school systems that work. We will draw upon methods and strategies used in schools in England that, despite being in areas of high social deprivation, scored very highly in England’s new national tests; tests that marked a very significant rise in national expectations for 11-year-old children. The day will cover the following key areas: the importance of phonics and how this links to reading for pleasure; the direct teaching of reading comprehension; and the importance of vocabulary knowledge. The day will also consider the importance of establishing the whole school systems required to ensure any developments are sustainable into the future.
Prior attendance at a two-day Talk for Writing workshop is a pre-requisite for this workshop.
Presenter: Dean Thompson, TfW Trainer and Literacy Consultant. Dean is currently working closely with Pie Corbett on the ‘Primary Writing Project’, working with clusters of schools over a two year period in order to transform their reading and writing results through Talk for Writing. In addition, Dean and Pie have recently begun to develop the ‘Primary Reading Project’, specifically designed to improve reading outcomes in schools. He was a deputy of a 600+ student school in a very challenging area and has managed the successful implementation of TfW there transforming the school and improving student outcomes. Dean is a very popular presenter and highly sought after consultant and will be in Perth for a very limited period.
