‘Magic Boxes’ is a structured, sequential and highly effective spelling program designed to take children from the early stages of spelling through to a knowledge of English morphology and etymology. Successfully trialled in Western Australia, the students and teachers using the program have both enjoyed the activities and been surprised by the significant improvements achieved.
‘Magic Boxes’ is compatible with both the Department of Education’s scope and sequence documents and the recently released Australian Curriculum (English). It was developed by Sue Lambert and Iola Knight as an explicit and systematic spelling program for the early years of school, based on the latest research. The program includes lists of words, games and activities for use throughout Pre-Primary, Year 1 and Year 2.
This free presentation introduces the ‘Magic Boxes’ program and also the recently released Set B, aimed at Year 2 and provides early childhood and primary school teachers with an opportunity to review the materials and ask questions about the program’s development.
Presenters: Sue Lambert and Iola Knight are both experienced literacy teachers from All Saints’ College, Bull Creek. They are both passionate about spelling and about improving outcomes for all students – including those who just don’t seem to get it! In 2011 they were given a grant by All Saints’ College that enabled them to publish the successful spelling program they had been developing and trialling over a number of years. The result is ‘Magic Boxes’.
