Dyslexia – Defining Features and Effective Strategies 119AA

Dyslexia (a Specific Learning Disability in Reading) is characterised by a significant difficulty with reading and spelling. These difficulties are unexpected in relation to a child’s age, level of schooling and other abilities. Individuals with Dyslexia also typically fail to respond adequately to structured intervention.
This workshop will provide participants with an understanding of the defining features of reading disorders and will focus on the functional impact of Dyslexia, demonstrating effective strategies for use both in and out of the classroom.

Presenter: Lisa Watts, BSc (Hons), MPsych (Ed. & Dev.), Dip. Ed, (Spec. Ed.). Lisa is a Psychologist on the DSF clinical team who provides consultations and assessments of students and adults with learning difficulties and an experienced presenter. Prior to joining DSF, Lisa worked for the WA Department of Education, and most recently lead a team of Teachers, Psychologists and Educational Assistants. Lisa consulted and worked with school staff, families and students with complex profiles, using an ecological framework and evidenced based methods to maximise learning outcomes.
